What Happens After “You Have the Right to an Attorney”? This 3-part virtual lunchtime series will explore how Pennsylvania’s public defense system works, what effective and ethical representation requires, and how modern public defense models are changing the way lawyers represent clients. The programs are open to legislators, legislative staff, attorneys, advocates, students, community members, and the general public.
Free CLE credit will be available for attorneys.
What happens when critical evidence isn’t uncovered, a defense isn’t adequately investigated, or a client doesn’t receive the representation they need?
The second installment of the 3-part “lunch and learn” series will explore what effective and ethical representation requires, what can interfere with it, and what we can learn when representation does not produce a reliable result. Drawing on the experience of attorneys who work on innocence, post-conviction, and capital cases, and the lived experience of a person who went through the criminal legal system, the program will examine the practical meaning of effective and ethical representation.
