FREADom: Banned Books Week

Banned Books Week is September 23-29

In partnership with the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh and the Book Fairies, the ACLU-PA Greater Pittsburgh Chapter will celebrate Banned Books Week by distributing banned and challenged books around the city for “FREADom,” its 23rd annual celebration of reading, free speech, and artistic expression.

In the same manner as the Book Fairies, popularized by Emma Watson and now active in over 100 countries, participants will “drop” or hide their books for strangers to find in parks, college campuses, coffee shops, museums, and more, with accompanying social media announcements and clues about the books’ locations. Interested readers can track down and claim these books by following #aclupabannedbooks and #ireadbannedbooks throughout Banned Books Week.

Please join the Greater Pittsburgh Chapter at one of our book wrapping parties - we’ll get books ready to “drop” by decorating them with ribbons, stickers, and notes about the importance of protecting free speech and the perils of banning books. You may bring your own new or gently used copy of your favorite banned books or wrap one of ours!
