HARRISBURG – The ACLU and ACLU of Pennsylvania are launching a campaign to educate voters ahead of the pivotal state Supreme Court retention elections this November. With an investment of $500k, the ACLU is dedicated to ensuring that residents of the commonwealth understand the far-reaching impacts their votes have on fundamental rights and freedoms.
Three state Supreme Court justices will face a yes-or-no retention vote that could extend their tenure on the bench for another decade, presenting a rare opportunity for voters to influence the courts that affect their daily lives.
“The Supreme Court of Pennsylvania has often been the last line of defense for our civil liberties. In recent years, the court has made monumental rulings on abortion rights, voting rights, workers' rights, and access to healthcare,” said Mike Lee, executive director of the ACLU of Pennsylvania. “We want Pennsylvania voters to know that even during off-year elections, their choices carry immense weight in shaping the outlook of our communities and the strength of our constitutional protections.”
Historically, many eligible voters voluntarily waive their right to vote during off-year elections, often due to a lack of awareness and engagement. The ACLU will use a comprehensive mail program to inform voters about this retention election for the Pennsylvania Supreme Court and what it means for their civil rights and civil liberties.
