Over the last two legislative sessions, the ACLU-PA has been urging state legislators to reform Pennsylvania’s archaic and overly-punitive probation system. Although the probation system itself is complex, the changes needed to fix it are not. 

The ACLU of Pennsylvania is in federal court this week, arguing for a classwide injunction that would immediately release from ICE custody medically vulnerable people from immigration detention in Clinton, Pike, and York counties.

A few weeks ago, Carlos Ernesto Escobar Mejia, a 57-year-old man who had diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart problems tested positive for COVID-19 and died in immigration detention shortly after.
