ACLU-PA Position: Opposes

House Bill 90 adds “employment as a law enforcement officer, firefighter or emergency medical services provider” as a protected class to the Ethnic Intimidation Statute. Commonly known as hate crimes, a person can be charged with ethnic intimidation if their motivation to commit a crime against a person or that person’s property was based on the person’s status in the protected class. Current protected classes are race, color, religion, and national origin.
