PennDOT currently requires an applicant for REAL ID to provide an original Social Security card, but does not provide any other document options to verify a person's Social Security number. Pennsylvania is the only state that does not provide residents with alternative SSN verification options.
HB 238 (PN 190) would require PennDOT to accept additional documentation permitted under the federal REAL ID Act of 2005 to verify an applicant’s Social Security number when applying for REAL ID. Specifically, HB 238 would require PennDOT to accept the following documents:
Social Security card
W-2 form
SSA 1099 form
Non-SSA 1099 form
Pay stub that fulfills the requirements of the REAL ID Act for the purpose of reviewing an application for a REAL ID and verifying an applicant’s Social Security number.
