HARRISBURG – Pennsylvania’s House Health Committee voted this afternoon to send anti-abortion measure House Bill 1948 to the full House for consideration.  HB 1948 would ban abortion after 20 weeks and ban one of the most common methods of second trimester abortion.

The following statement can be attributed to Reggie Shuford, executive director of the ACLU of Pennsylvania:

“House Bill 1948 is yet another attempt to shut down access to safe and legal abortions in the commonwealth under the guise of protecting women.  We believe women, in consultation with their doctors, should make these important and personal medical decisions – not politicians.”

The following statement can be attributed to Julie Zaebst, manager of the ACLU of Pennsylvania’s Duvall Reproductive Freedom Project, and chair of the PA Campaign for Women’s Health (http://pa4womenshealth.org):

“If House members were truly interested in protecting women’s health, they could advance one of the dozen bills that are part of the bi-partisan Pennsylvania Agenda for Women’s Health. But rather than pursue evidence-based solutions to real women’s health issues, House members are busy implementing abortion restrictions that fly in the face of medical science and put women’s health at risk.”
