Montgomery County's top two public defenders, Chief Dean Beer and Deputy Chief Keisha Hudson, were fired for exposing flaws in the criminal legal system.
After filing a legal brief critical of the use of cash bail in the county, both Beer and Hudson were abruptly terminated by the Montgomery County Commissioners. Community advocates in support of criminal legal reform are alarmed because this sends a very clear message — those who speak out will be silenced.
Public defenders should not be punished for trying to help their clients or for supporting vital reform. Help us protest this injustice so that Chief Dean Beer and Deputy Chief Keisha Hudson can get their jobs back.
**If you're a Montgomery County resident, attend the commissioners' meeting at 10am to speak during the public comment period. And all are welcome to join us on the courthouse steps across the street to call for justice in Montgomery County. Protest signs will be provided, but people are welcome to bring their own.
