The ACLU-PA has recognized the urgent need for more education and advocacy around transgender rights and the lived experiences of transgender Pennsylvanians, especially given the lack of non-discrimination protections here in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

The Trans Justice Initiative aims to work with partnering groups to pave the way for the passage of statewide, comprehensive non-discrimination protections, which is a top priority for the ACLU of Pennsylvania and an issue we have worked on for more than a decade. We are committed to supporting and building the leadership of transgender communities in this process. Together, ACLU-PA and transgender Pennsylvanians engage in public education, strategic communications and direct advocacy and lobbying to create a more just climate for affirming policy outcomes in the state.

Guidance for Pennsylvania Advocates Following Supreme Court decision in West Virginia v. B.P.J.

The U.S. Supreme Court's decision in West Virginia v. B.P.J. does not require Pennsylvania schools to ban transgender students from participating in sports. Pennsylvania has no statewide law requiring school districts to adopt exclusionary athletic policies. School boards can—and should—continue to support inclusive athletic programs.
