Oppose the Marriage Amendment!

In January of 2008, Pennsylvania State Senators started working to pass Senate Bill 1250, a bill that would amend the Pennsylvania Constitution to define marriage as solely between one man and one woman and prohibit civil unions and potentially more. If it passes, it could harm thousands of Pennsylvania families, including same-sex and unmarried heterosexual couples and their children.

The amendment would likely also interfere with local ordinances (like those in Philadelphia and Pittsburgh) that guarantee equal rights to everyone. The amendment recently passed in the Senate Judiciary Committee and is now slated for a vote in the Senate Appropriations Committee.

Today Pennsylvania is facing some extraordinary challenges. It is disturbing that instead of addressing our declining economy, some Pennsylvania legislators would rather spend their time and our tax dollars engaging in political pandering that would write discrimination into the Pennsylvania Constitution for decades to come. Please help us to stop this proposed amendment before it goes any further. The Constitution is for protecting rights and expanding rights--not restricting them.
