PATRIOT ACT ACTION STEPS MENU

Week One: June 19th – 25th

  • Generate statewide coalition letter requesting meeting with Specter (meet in district or offer to send delegation to D.C.)
  • Send out press releases as follow up from the conference, highlighting the broad based coalition work of the conference, as well as highlighting concerns about privacy rights, governmental accountability, the sunsets and the need for passage of the SAFE Act.
  • Thank Congress members who voted for the Freedom to Read Act.

Week Two: June 26th – July 2nd

  • Generate open letters to Specter from community entities like bookstores, gun clubs, libraries, faith-based groups, medical groups, etc citing concerns with the PATRIOT Act. These can be sent to the media as an open letter or editorial.
  • Approach major political donors and community leaders and request that they use their access to contact elected officials
  • Each organization or individual can write a personal letter to Specter

Week Three: July 3rd – July 9th(Fourth of July Congressional recess)

  • Schedule in-office visits with Senators and Representatives
  • Attend town halls, open hours and July 4th appearances by Congress members and present concerns about the PATRIOT Act. Appearances are usually publicized in the media and/or on the websites of elected officials.

Week Four: July 10th– July 16th

  • Call and email week for activists. As many people as possible should send emails and make personal phone calls to Senator Specter, Senator Santorum and individual representatives.
  • Schedule a house party in anticipation or coordinate a phone-a-thon.
  • July 12th - Phone zap day
  • July 14th - Email day. Make sure that you include your full contact info let them know you are a constituent

Week Five: July 17th – July 23rd

  • Call in to radio shows all week long to highlight concerns.
  • Organizational leaders/spokespeople and statewide groups can also set up radio interviews on the PATRIOT Act.

WEEK SIX: July 24th– July 30th

  • Final push mobilizing organization memberships and personal networks, using all available action steps.
