Constitution Under Siege

There has never been a more urgent need to preserve fundamental privacy protections and our system of checks and balances than the need we face today, as illegal government spying, provisions of the USA PATRIOT Act and government-sponsored torture programs transcend the bounds of law and our most treasured values in the name of national security.

President Bush has repeatedly betrayed his oath to "preserve, protect and defend" the Constitution of the United States."  And Congress has failed to hold him accountable for his actions.

Unauthorized domestic wiretapping...illegal detentions and flagrant violations of human rights at Guantanamo...secret CIA kidnappings that transport victims to countries that engage in torture...the use of the FBI's Joint Terrorism Task Forces to chill peaceful dissent...the refusal to hold high-level officials accountable for abusing prisoners at Abu Ghraib.

It's all part of a pattern undermining the Constitution - the very bedrock on which our country was founded.
