Please note that we do not require any legal background for these internships. We provide training and supervision for all positions. All we ask is an interest in civil liberties and a commitment of at least 5 hours per week between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. While we cannot offer a stipend, many area schools provide credit for our internships. Please speak with the internship office at your school if you are interested. Many people contact the ACLU with serious problems affecting them or their families. Volunteers and interns are needed to help sort through the problems, to do research into possible solutions, and to write up the issues for review or to provide other referrals. This is a good opportunity to learn about the types of problems that people encounter and the possible solutions to them. Students in law, social work, counseling, and related fields will find it especially beneficial. Staff members, including a lawyer, are available to review the more difficult problems and to offer suggestions to the volunteers. There are also a number of graduate students and other regular volunteers present daily to share ideas and advice. The ACLU is located in Oakland, just one block from Forbes Avenue. The office environment is very informal. It is fast paced but fun! If you are interested or have any questions, please call Susan McIntosh at 412-681-7736 or email to smcintosh@aclupa.org.
