DESCRIPTION The Frankel Fellow: ACLU-PA is seeking a law school student or graduate school student for the 2011-12 academic year who is interested in spending 10-20 hours per week defending freedom and advocating for justice for all via the legislative process. Potential tasks include assisting the legislative director with the following: • Direct lobbying of state lawmakers and legislative staff • Research on pending legislation • Work with coalition partners to strategically advocate for civil liberties • Write and design press releases, talking points memos, and other promotional materials • Handle online tools, including the website, blog, Facebook, Twitter, and email listserv • Organize public activity around legislative issues • Other miscellaneous tasks that occur in a small, nonprofit office
LOCATION This fellowship is available in our Harrisburg office or in our Philadelphia office. A fellow in the Philadelphia office must be willing to travel to Harrisburg during some legislative session days. Compensation for travel is available.
QUALIFICATIONS The candidate must be a law school student or graduate school student. Commitment to and enthusiasm for the mission and goals of the ACLU required. Superior oral and written communication skills. Computer proficiency using Microsoft Word and/or demonstrated ability to learn computer applications. Proficiency in Publisher and Excel helpful. This position is ideal for those who are studying law, political science, communications, or sociology, but students from all areas of study are welcome to apply.
BENEFITS The fellowship is offered on a volunteer basis. The most valuable benefit is the experience gained working in a nonprofit advocacy office, particularly in one small enough to enable interns to see their impact. Additionally, the ACLU staff is happy to write recommendations and otherwise support its interns and fellows, whenever appropriate. Credit can be applied to course schedule when the student has successfully completed the necessary hours and work required.
BACKGROUND The Frankel Fellowship is named for the late Larry Frankel. Larry was the legislative director of the ACLU of Pennsylvania from 1992 to 2008 and was the organization's executive director from 1996 to 2001. Larry left a legacy of integrity and honesty in advocating for civil liberties, and his enthusiasm for this work included a desire to mentor young civil libertarians on how to effectively advocate.
