The intern will work with the staff of the American Civil Liberties Union's Beyond Zero Tolerance Project. The project is a campaign that highlights the student pushout problem in Pennsylvania, with a focus on Philadelphia. The campaign addresses school disciplinary practices and school climates that result in students being pushed out of schools. The position is based in the Philadelphia office.
Intern responsibilities include:
- Prepare educational materials, such as pamphlets and brochures;
- Assist with the preparation of a study on alternative approaches to school discipline, including conducting research;
- Communicate with local coalition partners and with the national Dignity in Schools Campaign, including participating in meetings and working groups and assisting with event organizing;
- Organize workshops and community presentations; and
- Maintain an information and contact database.
Intern must have strong written, verbal communication, and research skills, and a demonstrated ability to work with diverse audiences. Intern should have a working knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation software. Prior experience working on public school issues preferred. Web media skills a plus.
Internship is unpaid.
