Development Intern - Pittsburgh

The Pittsburgh Chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union (the ACLU) offers an internship in Fundraising and Development.

As a non-profit, non-partisan organization dedicated to defending and expanding individual rights and personal freedom, the ACLU is the nation's foremost guardian of liberty.  The ACLU promotes, defends and advances constitutional principles founded in the Bill of Rights through litigation, legislative advocacy and community education. The Greater Pittsburgh Chapter is part of the ACLU of Pennsylvania statewide affiliate organization.

The organization is funded through individual contributions and occasional foundation grants.  The Pittsburgh Chapter's main fundraising effort is through our Annual Campaign. 

The activities of the Annual Campaign include:

  • Face-to Face Solicitations of individual contributors by trained volunteers
  • Donor Cultivation events ('Celebration of Freedom-The Personal Side of Civil Liberties" - client stories, Leadership Brunch)
  • House Parties
  • Mail solicitations

JOB DESCRIPTION

  • Enter information and update member contributions in database
  • Produce thank you letters and acknowledgements
  • Research new potential contributors
  • Assist in the planning and implementation of special events and house parties
  • Assist in the production of solicitation materials and mailings
  • Provide administrative support to and attend monthly meetings of the Development Committee
  • Work on special projects and other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Strong communication, organizational and administrative skills
  • Independent worker with ability to motivate, work well with, and lead others
  • Computer and database proficiency a must
  • Experience working with volunteers, committees and boards
  • Commitment to civil liberties and to the mission and goals of the ACLU required

HOURS/SCHEDULE

It is expected that the Development Intern will work an average of 10 hours per week. Scheduling is flexible within regular office hours and/or some off-site, evening or weekend work assignments. At least one evening per month for committee meeting is expected. The ACLU is located in Oakland, just two blocks from Forbes Avenue.  The office environment is fast paced but very informal.
