Privacy Statement for ACLU of Pennsylvania Online

The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of Pennsylvania is firmly committed to the privacy rights of our website visitors and all Americans. For more details about our advocacy work on electronic privacy, see the National ACLU's electronic privacy page.

This policy is intended to inform you of the collection, storage practices and guidelines for use of website visitor data. Accordingly, the following statements detail information gathering and dissemination practices for the ACLU of Pennsylvania Online, which is this site located at http://www.aclupa.org/.

User Tracking and Data Capture Practices

We use software which collects aggregate user information site-wide, including anonymous site statistics, such as the number of views of each page. We log domain names and/or IP (Internet Provider) address of visitors (such as psu.edu, aol.com, 209.168.3.1, etc.), which permits us to know what Internet domain visitors are from, or what access service they use, without knowing their individual identities. Because we do not require you to register with us, this "host level" tracking is our primary basis for assessing traffic patterns.

On certain pages such as the ACLU of Pennsylvania Volunteer Form, we give users the option of providing us with names, addresses, phone numbers, email addresses, and other personal information online. This information is gathered only with users' knowledge, active permission and participation. Furthermore, the ACLU of Pennsylvania will not divulge this information to anyone and will only use e-mail addresses for the stated purpose, unless permission is obtained to use the information in other ways.

At this time, no part of our site makes use of cookies for user tracking, content customization, or any other purpose.

ACLU Membership List Confidentiality

The ACLU membership lists are private. Third parties may not obtain information about a person's membership status or obtain a list of members.

The ACLU does, however, allow for non-ACLU mailings to be sent to our members under certain guidelines. The mailing is done in such a way that there is no opportunity for the other group to obtain possession of our list. Either a third-party professional mailing house with a confidentiality policy is used, or the ACLU itself oversees the mailing.

The ACLU allows other organizations to send mail to our list for substantive and organizational reasons. If the ACLU is working jointly with another group on an important civil liberties issue, it may advance the cause to allow our ally to use the membership list on a one-time basis, only if they use an approved mail house. Additionally, the use of other groups' lists is one of the most effective ways to gain new ACLU members. The ACLU never sells its list for unsupervised use. All groups and mail that will be sent to our members is approved. However, members who do not wish to be mailed any non-ACLU materials can either call the ACLU of Pennsylvania office or drop a postcard directly to the National ACLU, Membership Department, 125 Broad St., 18th Floor, New York, NY 10004-2500.

Volunteer Information

Volunteers at the ACLU of Pennsylvania have their information tied to their membership information. If a volunteer is not a member of the ACLU, we do not make it a policy of retaining their information after their work is completed.
