Job Announcement
Project Coordinator for the Duvall Project in Pittsburgh
The Clara Bell Duvall Reproductive Freedom Project at the ACLU of Pennsylvania is seeking a part-time project coordinator for its Incarcerated Women's Project. The project's focus is to advocate for the rights of incarcerated women to reproductive health care. Specifically we are assessing the extent to which legislation and policies that restrict the use of shackles and other restraints on pregnant women are being implemented by county jails.
The position involves working with hospital staff members that provide prenatal care, and labor and delivery services to incarcerated women in western Pennsylvania. The Project Coordinator will do outreach and networking in order to set up meetings with doctors and nurses at these hospitals.
Hospitals will vary in how much time they are willing to meet. For shorter meetings the Project Coordinator will provide a brief overview of the project, the new law banning restraints and seek participants' cooperation in filling out a research survey. For longer meetings, the Project Coordinator will give a PowerPoint presentation (that has already been developed) providing an overview of the project and then will seek participants' cooperation in filling out a research survey.
The Project Coordinator will also work in collaboration with local activists and service providers to improve services and policies in selected jails in western Pennsylvania.
The 8-month position is part-time (approximately 10 hours per week, but will vary week to week) from approximately March 1 to October 31, 2012.
Qualifications
- Commitment to and familiarity with reproductive health issues (including abortion).
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.

- Ability to speak comfortably with doctors, nurses and prison personnel and with public speech
- Organized and self-motivated.
- Able to give PowerPoint presentations.
- Previous experience with incarcerated women a plus.
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience.
