POSITION AVAILABLE: LEGISLATIVE DIRECTOR - Central/Eastern Region Office The American Civil Liberties Union of Pennsylvania seeks a full-time Legislative Director. The ACLU is a national, non-profit, public interest organization that works to defend civil liberties and civil rights. The Legislative Director reports to the Executive Director and is responsible for advancing the legislative agenda of the ACLU of Pennsylvania before the Pennsylvania General Assembly. The Legislative Director also provides assistance to ACLU of Pennsylvania chapters regarding local legislation. The ACLU of Pennsylvania lobbies on a broad range of civil liberties issues, including civil rights, criminal justice, death penalty, freedom of expression, immigration, LGBT rights, religious liberty, reproductive rights and voting rights. The Legislative Director for the ACLU of Pennsylvania is an important member of the Management Team and serves as the organization’s primary spokesperson on legislative issues arising in Pennsylvania. Principal Responsibilities- Developing legislative priorities;
- Devising strategies to achieve legislative goals;
- Meeting with legislators, staff and other advocates regarding legislation;
- Preparing and delivering testimony, letters and memoranda stating the ACLU’s position on legislations;
- Researching and drafting bills and amendments;Participating as the ACLU representative in legislative coalitions;
- Responding to media requests on legislative matters;
- Responding to requests from affiliate staff, Board members and activists regarding legislative matters; and
- Preparing legislative reports for Board of Directors.
Skills and QualificationsGraduate degree in related field; A minimum of 3 years experience working on legislative matters, preferably in the areas of civil liberties and civil rights; Strong writing and speaking skills; Ability to analyze legislation and think strategically about bills and legislative process; Demonstrated ability in dealing with media and coalitions; Ability to work with diverse staff, activists and advocacy organizations; Demonstrated commitment to and knowledge of issues relating to civil liberties and the goals of the ACLU.
