The American Civil Liberties Union of Pennsylvania (ACLU-PA) is seeking a full-time Community Education Organizer to work in its Pittsburgh office on community and chapter outreach efforts in western Pennsylvania. The ACLU-PA is the Pennsylvania state affiliate of the American Civil Liberties Union. As a non-profit, non-partisan organization dedicated to defending and expanding individual rights and personal freedom, the ACLU is the nation's foremost guardian of liberty. The ACLU-PA promotes, defends and advances constitutional principles founded in the Bill of Rights through litigation, legislative advocacy and community education. JOB DESCRIPTIONThe Community Education Organizer will be expected to perform the following duties: - Public education programs: Plan, implement, and organize community education including the management and expansion of the local speaker’s bureau program, recruitment and training of speakers, marketing program, and preparing background materials for speakers;
- Minors’ rights project: Serve as coordinator for a special project to develop a legal standard of care for sexual assault victims who are minors; convene stakeholders’ group, plan and implement consensus-building meeting; develop training materials; plan and implement local distribution, education and implementation of guidelines;
- Communications and publications: Assist in the development and distribution of public education materials, ACLU-PA website, listserves, and other initiatives as needed;
- Outreach: Collaborate with other groups and individuals working on similar issues;
- Collaboration: Work with other staff across the state to develop and implement a state-wide public education program;
- Chapters: Serve as liaison to the ACLU Pittsburgh chapter and chapters in western Pennsylvania and work with chapter boards and committees to develop community education programs and outreach efforts (some regional travel anticipated); provide staff support to Pittsburgh Chapter Public Education Committee and Reproductive Rights Committee;
- Student Chapters: Provide assistance to student chapters and act as a liaison between and among student groups in high school or colleges in western Pennsylvania;
QUALIFICATIONS- Strong communication, organizational and administrative skills.
- Independent worker with ability to motivate, work well with, and lead others.
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
- Experience working on advocacy matters and organizing grassroots efforts.
- Experience working with volunteers, committees and boards.
- Commitment to civil liberties through advocacy, public education and lobbying and to the mission and goals of the ACLU required.
