The Public Education Committee of the ACLU of Pennsylvania Greater Philadelphia Chapter, an all-volunteer committee of the chapter’s Board of Directors, has partnered with the Philadelphia Chapter of NOW, BEBASHI (Blacks Educating Blacks About Sexual Health Information), Philadelphia FIGHT, and the Philadelphia Chapter of NAACP to co-sponsor a two-part forum, Sex, Lies, and Constitutional Issues. Part II of the forum series, “Abstinence-Only 'Education' & Policies,” will be presented on April 9th, 2008. Date: Wednesday, April 9th Time: 6:30-8:30pm Location: Temple University Tuttleman Learning Center, Room 105 (On 13th Street at Montgomery Avenue) Philadelphia, PA Evidence shows that sexuality education that stresses the importance of waiting to have sex while providing accurate, age-appropriate, and complete information about how to use contraceptives effectively to prevent unintended pregnancy and STDs can help teens make healthy and responsible life decisions. Yet there is currently no federal program dedicated to supporting this approach. Instead, since 1996, the federal government has funneled more than a billion dollars into abstinence-only-until-marriage programming, even in the face of clear evidence that these programs do not work. At this forum federal, state, and local policies, practices and advocacy efforts will be presented in addition to suggested action steps for attendees. FREE AND OPEN TO THE PUBLIC. A question and answer session will follow. Refreshments will be served. PRESENTERS:Kate Morrison - State Policy Coordinator for SIECUS (Sexuality Information and Education Council of the United States) Joe Fay - Director of Pennsylvania Coalition to Prevent Teen Pregnancy and Co-Chair of PARSE (Pennsylvanians for Responsible Sex Education) Tiffany Thompson - Manager of Community Education for CHOICE of Philadelphia & the ACLU of PA Stacey Zyzyck - JD Candidate at the University of Pennsylvania Law School & ACLU Intern Additional InformationFor additional information call 215.592.1513 x117 or e-mail scoburn@aclupa.org
