The Supreme Court has exhibited a renewed interest in freedom of speech under the First Amendment. Recent decisions would seem to support unpopular, offensive, and harmful speech (A good example would be the Court's April 2010 decision to protect videos of brutality to animals even though the recorded act itself was a crime). Subsequent grants of certiorari seem to indicate that the Court has more to say on the subject of freedom of speech. The Court has accepted for review a decision protecting the right of Westboro Baptist Church to demonstrate at the funerals of American soldiers killed in Iraq. Westboro claims that such casualties are punishment for the nation's protection of gay rights. In this course our guest speakers will examine the issues the Court will address in this highly controversial case. Other issues to be discussed in this CLE program include the extent to which First Amendment applies to children both in and out of school.
