Duvall Summer 2011 Internship

Become a Duvall Intern!

The Clara Bell Duvall Reproductive Freedom Project, which is a part of the ACLU of Pennsylvania, has been working to ensure access to reproductive rights since 1979. Most recently we have been working on issues related to improving services for incarcerated women including groundwork for a pilot project to deliver contraceptive services to women during their incarceration. We have developed a unique set of materials for health care provides to increase their willingness to allow minors to consent to services, aptly called "Do you have to tell my mom? Minors, Health Care & The Law." We are also working on increasing access to emergency contraception for survivors of rape and sexual assault.

The Duvall Project has a long history of working with students. Our role in mentoring young people who are interested in reproductive health and freedom is an important part of our identity as an organization. We strive to provide students with the opportunity to do meaningful work, and we encourage them to voice their own opinions and ideas about the work we are undertaking.

Job Description:

The Duvall Project is offering 2-3 internships to undergraduates during the summer. Interns work on substantive projects. Currently we are working on several projects: improving services for incarcerated women, educating clinicians about minors' rights to confidential reproductive health care, and research and advocacy work regarding health care reform. Generally, we are looking for students with a demonstrated interest in women's and reproductive right issues either through coursework, volunteering, or job experience.

Compensation:

As a small, nonprofit organization, the Duvall Project typically does not receive funding for specific internship opportunities. Many colleges and universities offer stipends or work-study arrangements for students wishing to pursue internships like those offered by Duvall. It is also possible to seek support from outside foundations, scholarships, and grants. Summer interns often work at the Duvall Project 15 to 20 hours per week, allowing them to hold part-time, paid employment while continuing their commitment to reproductive freedom.
