Internships and Volunteer Opportunities
The Clara Bell Duvall Reproductive Freedom Project offers internships to students during both the academic year and the summer. Interns work on substantive projects and their voices and ideas play a critical role in the Duvall Project’s work. An emphasis on collaborative work provides excellent training and mentoring opportunities for interns and ensures that the Duvall Project’s work is relevant across generations. By cultivating the skills and dedication of our interns we help create long-term, powerful advocates of social change and reproductive freedom. No experience beyond a commitment to the ideals of the pro-choice and reproductive rights community is necessary to becoming an intern.
The Duvall Project is a recognized field placement for:
- UPenn Social Policy and Practice
- Temple University Women and Gender Studies Department
- Bryn Mawr Graduate School of Social Work and Social Research
- Northeastern Coop Program
Other interns have worked with the Duvall Project while pursuing MPH degrees from Johns Hopkins University, Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, and Tufts University. Internship opportunities are available at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.
The Duvall Project also welcomes volunteers not affiliated with a school or university. To volunteer at the ACLU of Pennsylvania, please read more about Volunteer opportunities and complete a Volunteer Inquiry Form.
Compensation
As a small, nonprofit organization, the Duvall Project typically does not receive funding for specific internship opportunities. Many colleges and universities offer stipends or work-study arrangements for students wishing to pursue internships like those offered by Duvall. It is also possible to seek support from outside foundations, scholarships, and grants. Summer interns often work at the Duvall Project from 15 to 20 hours per week, allowing them to hold part-time, paid employment while continuing their commitment to reproductive freedom.
When to Apply
The Duvall Project reviews applications for internships several times per year--typically in accordance with the academic year. If you wish to intern during your school's academic year or during the summer, please submit your resume and cover letter 2-3 months prior to your anticipated start date.
Because of the high volume of applicants for the limited summer internship positions, review of applications begins in the beginning of February. To ensure that your application is considered, be sure to submit your cover letter and resume to us no later than February 1st.
