Summer Legal Internship On The Rights Of Pregnant And Parenting TeensSupervisor: Carol Petraitis, Director, Clara Bell Duvall Reproductive Freedom Project Legal Supervisor: Vic Walczak, Legal Director This summer, the Duvall Project is offering a summer law student internship that will be focused on developing strategies – both legal and otherwise – to address the difficulties faced by pregnant and parenting teenagers, with a particular focus on access to educational opportunities. This internship is separate from, and will not involve the same amount of purely “legal” work, as a standard summer law student internship. In addition to legal research and writing, the intern will conduct factual and policy research, help to coordinate with potential collaborative partners, and potentially help with outreach to potential clients through preparation of public education materials and other strategies. Interested students should send a cover letter or email (headed “Duvall Legal Internship”), resume, most recent law school transcript and legal writing sample to info@aclupa.org no later than March 1, 2008. General InformationInternships and Volunteer OpportunitiesThe Clara Bell Duvall Reproductive Freedom Project offers internships to students throughout the year--during both the academic year and the summer. Interns work on substantive projects, and their voices and ideas play a critical role in the Duvall Project’s work. The emphasis on collaborative work provides excellent training and mentoring opportunities for students and ensures that the Duvall Project’s work is relevant across generations. The Duvall Project is a recognized field placement location for MSW students at the University of Pennsylvania School of Social Policy & Practice, as well as the Women’s Studies departments at the University of Pennsylvania and Temple University. Other interns have worked with the Duvall Project while pursuing MPH degrees from Johns Hopkins University, Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, and Tufts University. Internship opportunities are available at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. The Duvall Project also welcomes volunteers not affiliated with a school or university. To volunteer at the ACLU of Pennsylvania, please read more about Volunteer opportunities and complete a Volunteer Inquiry Form. CompensationAs a small, nonprofit organization, the Duvall Project typically does not receive funding for specific internship opportunities. Many colleges and universities offer stipends or work-study arrangements for students wishing to pursue internships like those offered by Duvall. It is also possible to seek support from outside foundations, scholarships, and grants. Summer interns often work at the Duvall Project from 15 to 20 hours per week, allowing them to hold part-time, paid employment while continuing their commitment to reproductive freedom. When to ApplyThe Duvall Project reviews applications for internships several times per year--typically in accordance with the academic year. If you wish to intern during your school's academic year or during the summer, please submit your resume and cover letter 2-3 months prior to your anticipated start date. Because of the high volume of applicants for the limited summer internship positions, review of applications begins in the beginning of March. To ensure that your application is considered, be sure to submit your cover letter and resume to us no later than March 15. How to ApplyTo apply, send cover letter and resume to: Carol Petraitis ACLU of Pennsylvania PO Box 40008 Philadelphia, PA 19106 Or email via attachment to duvall@aclupa.org
