How can I help rape victims get EC?

Take Action!

After completing the 2000 survey, the Duvall Project published a fact sheet to share the results with both the public and hospital administrators. During the summer of 2001, and again during the summer of 2002, we mailed letters to the CEO and Emergency Department Chair of every hospital in Pennsylvania to encourage them to develop a responsible EC policy if there was not one already in place at their hospital. The next step in our campaign to improve emergency services for rape victims in Pennsylvania hospitals includes you! We would love to help community members organize both group and individual efforts to work with local hospitals.

You Can Improve ER Care for Rape Victims

  • Write to hospitals in your community to let them know that their patients want rape victims to receive the best treatment available.
  • Visit hospitals to discuss their policy on emergency contraception.
  • Organize community groups--like ACLU chapters, the YWCA, and local women's groups--as well as college women's groups--to work on some of the grassroots organizing ideas listed below.

Organize to Improve ER Care for Rape Victims

  • Start a letter writing campaign in your county--write to hospitals and let them know what you think about their EC policies.
  • Contact a local rape crisis center to work with them to improve hospital provision of emergency contraception.
  • Arrange to visit local hospitals to find out more about emergency contraception and their services for rape victims.
  • Contact Duvall for more resources.
