The Williamsport Chapters of the American Civil Liberties Union and the National Organization for Women proudly sponsor: WHAT: A Boston Legal Viewing Party with discussion to follow Nancy Steil, a sexual assault forensic nurse examiner at Williamsport Hospital, will lead a discussion the topic, provide an update on local hospital policy on providing emergency contraception (EC) to rape victims, and discuss pending legislation that would require all hospitals in PA to provide rape victims with the option to take EC. The legislation, named the Compassionate Assistance for Rape Emergencies (CARE) Act, is currently under consideration by the PA General Assembly. WHEN: Wednesday, October 11 at 7pm WHERE: YWCA, 815 West Fourth Street The Boston Legal Viewing Party will feature the "Smile" episode of the hit ABC-TV show that addresses the critical role of emergency contraception following a sexual assault. In this episode, a young woman sues a Catholic hospital for denying her emergency contraception while being treated after rape. Her attorney, Shirley Schmidt, emphasizes the professional obligation doctors have to their patients to disclose all available treatment options even when those options might conflict with the doctor's personal beliefs. However, it is ultimately up to the hospital to ensure that their doctors are fulfilling those professional obligations and ensuring that patients are receiving comprehensive, compassionate care. The program is free and open to the public. For more information, call NOW at (570) 323-4923 or Mary Sieminski at 322-5123.
