Volunteering

We are always looking for people with a variety of skills and interests. If you would like to offer your talents, please call our office at 412-681-7736 or email to pghinfo@aclupa.org.

Please note that we do not require any legal background for these positions. We will provide training and supervision for all volunteers. All we ask is an interest in civil liberties.

Volunteer Opportunity Descriptions

(You must be an ACLU member to serve on a committee.)

Development Committee
Oversees the chapter’s fundraising efforts, including the Annual Campaign and recruitment and training of volunteers to meet with donors to ask for contributions to the ACLU Foundation.

Diversity Committee
Works to attract diverse and young members to programs and activities; encourage their participation on board and committees; help chapter meet diversity goals.

Legal Intake
Responsibilities include client intake and referral; research and writing; possible case preparation. Many people contact the ACLU with serious problems affecting them or their families. Volunteers and interns are needed to help sort through the problems, to do research into possible solutions, and to write up the issues for review or to provide other referrals. This is a good opportunity to learn about the types of problems that people encounter and the possible solutions to them.

Legal Observing
The ACLU frequently receives requests to supply legal observers for protests, marches, and civil disobedience actions. The chief purpose of Legal Observing is to help to ensure the free and safe exercise of First Amendment rights. Legal Observers attend rallies, marches, sit-ins, and other protest events to observe and record incidents, arrests, and official misconduct.

Program Committee
The Programs Committee plans program and events such as the Annual Meeting, the summer member picnic, and Banned Books.

Public Education Committee
The Public Education Committee works to ensure an effective general public, constituent and member education and public information program through outreach programs, tabling events, and a Speakers Bureau.

Reproductive Rights Committee
The Reproductive Rights Committee works on public education & legislative activities on reproductive rights issues.

The "Flyering" Squad
If you are willing to put up flyers at a location that is convenient to you, join our Flyering Squad! The ACLU needs a lot of help to widely advertise our events. We've noticed that new people most often attend our events because they saw a flyer. If you sign up for the Flyering Squad, we will contact you approximately once a month and ask you to post flyers in a particular neighborhood (of your choosing). If you are unable to print out some flyers at a computer or pick them up, the ACLU will get them to you.

If you are interested or have any questions, please call us at 412-681-7736 or email us at pghinfo@aclupa.org.
