Please note that we do not require any legal background for these positions. We will provide training and supervision for all volunteers. All we ask is an interest in civil liberties. The office is open 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. Available Positions LEGAL INTAKE: Responsibilities include client intake and referral; research and writing; possible case preparation. Many people contact the ACLU with serious problems affecting them or their families. Volunteers and interns are needed to help sort through the problems, to do research into possible solutions, and to write up the issues for review or to provide other referrals. This is a good opportunity to learn about the types of problems that people encounter and the possible solutions to them. PUBLIC RELATIONS: Responsibilities include representing the ACLU at public events, maintaining a computerized database of community organizations and businesses, creating and maintaining a year-round public event calendar, writing or designing press releases, flyers, and other promotional materials. WRITING: Responsibilities include writing and editing articles for local and state newsletters and our web site. COMPUTER HELP: Responsibilities include troubleshooting; evaluating our computer upgrade needs; setting up databases; answering staff and volunteer questions about various programs, including WordPerfect, Word, Office 97, and Windows 98; helping staff network computers and printers. GENERAL OFFICE HELP: Responsibilities include database entry, filing, and helping with mailings. The ACLU is located in Oakland, just two blocks from Forbes Avenue.
